Scott Van Winkle was born on April 5, 1954, in Genoa, Nebraska, to George and Neola Van Winkle. Scott and his siblings—brothers Clint, Lee, Lyndon (“Pook”), Neal, Kevin, and Duane, along with sister DeLois (“Dee”)—grew up helping with the daily operations and chores on the family farm.During high school, Scott also earned extra money mowing lawns and working for Grosch Irrigation.

 

After graduating from high school, Scott moved to Imperial, Nebraska, where he worked for Larry Riley and assisted with his auction service. In September 1972, Larry brought Scott to Ogallala Livestock to work the ring while Larry helped sell the sale. What began as a temporary opportunity quickly sparked a passion for the livestock auction industry. Clyde and Jerry Speck recognized Scott’s enthusiasm and work ethic and offered him a position. He accepted and began working full-time as a yardman in January 1973. Over time, his responsibilities expanded, and he became a respected field representative as well.

In 1974, while making a feeder pig delivery, Scott met Kristine Sis. The couple married in 1975 and made their home in Ogallala while Scott continued building his career at the sale barn. During this time, they welcomed two sons, Luke and Nick.

In the fall of 1984, Chappell Livestock became part of the Ogallala Livestock family. Scott and Kristine moved their family to Chappell, Nebraska, where Scott was selected to manage the operation for the Speck family. In 1986, the Van Winkles were blessed with triplet sons—Lance, Cole, and Jordan. The boys were raised in and around the livestock marketing business, learning firsthand the values of hard work and customer service. Chappell Livestock remained in operation until 2001, after which Scott’s focus returned to Ogallala Livestock Auction Market.
